Sunday saw a welcome return to competition for Shetland’s athletes with the first home competition of the season, held at Clickimin Athletics Track. In total 71 performances were recorded over the two hour open graded programme with many athletes achieving personal bests, despite the cold and windy conditions.
A biting headwind on the home straight had a knock on impact on the times achieved on the track and the field distances recorded reflected the bitterly cold air but all coaches were delighted with the progress of winter training being demonstrated by the athletes.
The full results of the competition are as follows:

Shetland Amateur Athletics Club Chairwoman, Elaine Park commented, “Sunday’s competition was great and you could see the smiles of the athletes, coaches and officials as they settled back into a competition format unaffected by COVID restrictions. The sport has lost a lot of ground over the pandemic, with the older teenagers perhaps suffering the most, and this has been a great start to the re-build. We have had athletes qualifying to represent Shetland at the North District Championships with their first performances of the season and that is remarkable. The Club wish to thank Jamieson’s of Shetland for their continued sponsorship and support with our home competition calendar, which continues on Sunday 24th April with our Spring Open and Junior Inter County trials. The competition is open to everyone and entries can be made through Entry Central https://www.entrycentral.com/festival/3104. Entries close on Monday 18th April at 12 noon and we would encourage anyone who is interested in being part of the team travelling to Orkney in June to come along and try out.”
