Sunday saw the Shetland Amateur Athletics Club host the second of the Club’s Open Graded Meetings, sponsored by Jamieson’s of Shetland. The event also provided the second opportunity to trial for the Junior Inter County Team to face Orkney in a few weeks time. Events on offer in this meet were the 100m, 200m and 800 on the track and the javelin and high jump in the field. The wind conditions provided the athletes with a challenging cross wind, with the 800m runners catching it in all directions and javelin throwers watching a few throws drift during the competition.
Shetland Amateur Athletics Club Chairwoman, Elaine Park commented, “It was really heartening to see so many athletes enter and perform in the second of our OGMs. Athletics in Shetland continues to rebuild following the impacts of the pandemic on individual sports such as ours. We have a challenging season ahead with a return to away competitions, with 27 athletes travelling to the North Districts Athletics Championships in Inverness next weekend and the Junior Inter County and Scottish Schools competitions coming quickly behind them and the excitement around the sport is starting to increase steadily. Home competitions such as the OGMs give valuable opportunities to the athletes and stand them in good stead for selection at the next level. I would like to thank the coaches and officials, without whom none of these competitions would be possible and Jamieson’s of Shetland for their continued support.”
