Sunday saw seventy six local athletes display their talents across the full range of athletics events in the Shetland Amateur Athletics Club’s Spring Open Championships at Clickimin. Although it was dry and sunny, the wind was stronger than anticipated on the home straight and jump pit. Despite this there was many PBs and good performances to get the outdoor season underway.
Highlight of the day was Leigh Nicolson breaking the senior Shetland womens shot put record. Her 5th throw was a record and she broke it again with her 6th throw of 10.46. The existing record had stood since 2005 and was held by Josie Jamieson (10.33).
Shetland AAC Chairwoman, Elaine Park, commented, “The coaches are delighted with the efforts applied through winter training and they are starting to through today's results. The spring open forms the baseline for the seasons performances so everything looks promising for the year ahead. Thanks must go to all of our organisers, officials and volunteers, without you a competition like this would not be possible."
